Demolition work to clear space for new platforms to the north of the station is well underway and Reading signal box has been demolished. Part of the wooden roof structure of an old station ticket office can be seen - this will be donated to the Didcot railway centre.

To the west of the station BAM Nuttall is widening the bridge over Vastern Road to accommodate track for the new South West Trains/Waterloo platform on the south side of the station.
