With the next phase of redevelopment works at Tottenham Court Road Tube station about to begin, Transport for London installed a 40 metre-high crane at the top of Charing Cross Road over the weekend of 16-17 May 2009.

The crane will help with demolition work to clear space next to the station to allow expansion of the existing ticket hall and construction of the new Crossrail station. Tottenham Court Road station's Oxford Street south side entrance will be closed for around three months from the end of May to allow the crane to work immediately above the station.
