Latest pictures from Whitechapel as tunnelling work takes place 32 metres below ground to create approximately 1km of new station platforms and cross passages for Crossrail services.

Crossrail Ltd reports that tunnelling work is well underway to build 355 metres of cross passages and 640 metres of twin platform tunnels for the new station - each platform tunnel is nine metres in diameter and will accommodate the new 250 metre long platforms.

Excavations to create a 35 metre deep shaft near Durward Street - which will form the main access route to the Crossrail platforms - and a 30 metre wide, 35 metre deep emergency access shaft close to Cambridge Heath Road are also continuing. So far shaft excavations have reached a depth of 22 metres.

Meanwhile, work is getting underway to improve Court Street, which will become an access route to the temporary Whitechapel station entrance which will replace the main entrance from early 2014 when this shuts to allow reconfiguration of the station.
