In May 2012 designs for the 22 new second generation trams which will enter service on the extended Nottingham Express Transit network were unveiled.

The new vehicles are being manufactured by Alstom, part of the Tramlink Nottingham consortium which, in December 2011, won the 22-year concession to build two new lines and operate the expanded network.

Construction of the new trams will begin in Alstom's Barcelona plant in summer 2012 with the first vehicles due to enter service in 2014 ahead of the new lines opening.
