Gallery 239: Royal Oak Portal

Pictures from September 2011      © Transport Briefing

Pictures from a visit to the Crossrail Royal Oak Portal site in September 2011.

The Costain/Skanska joint venture has completed construction of the portal under C330 and tunnelling contractor BFK (C300) is carrying out further work to prepare for the launch of the first tunnel boring machine in spring 2012.

Three rows of piles will be sunk on the Paddington side of the portal (left, right and between the two bores) to support the tunnel sides just below ground level and a concrete slab will enclose the metal supports outside the tunnel portals (but will not be cast until after tunnelling begins).
